The staff at Tuffy's in Ankeny is always accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable. Based on many years of experience with them, I have always felt comfortable with their maintenance suggestions. I have never felt like they were taking advantage of a patron that might not understand the "mechanics" of keeping a car safe and functional! It's a pleasure to do business with them!
I've been to Tuffy's twice and I've been extremely happy with both experiences! The first time I was allowed to use a vehicle to get to work while they did and oil change and checked for other issues with my car. I was very happy to not have to take time off work for this and very grateful to the really kind employees. The second time was earlier this week. I stopped by to see if they could check my tire pressure and not only did they do that they also filled them up and topped off my brake fluid AT NO CHARGE! As a single woman it is really reassuring to know that I can get help with my car issues without worrying that I'm being taken advantage of. Thanks guys!
I would give this shop 0 Stars if I could. I just moved to Ankeny and took my car to this shop for the first time for a simple oil change and tire rotation. They told me they couldn't rotate my tires because "the lug nuts were too tight." So, I took it back to the Goodyear I always took my car to in Cedar Rapids for years and whom have always done a terrific job (I only stopped going to them because I moved). I have had work done to all 3 of my vehicles at this shop and have always been happy. They immediately brought me out to the shop and showed me that the lug nuts were stripped because Tuffy used a 12-socket wrench instead of a 6-socket. They could tell by the way the lug nuts looked. They also showed me damage that was caused to one of my rims from their tool. I called Tuffy to tell them what happened and they immediately denied causing any damage - in fact, I spoke with the owner who wasn't even there the day I took my car in and he immediately started denying any wrongdoing. How can you deny it when you weren't even there that day and don't even know who I am?? Then, I spoke with the manager who NOW tells me the reason they couldn't get the lug nuts off was because they were stripped. So before, it was because they were too tight and now it's because they're stripped? They also didn't mention anything about the lug nuts being damaged the day I was there for the tire rotation, only that they were too tight. The manager continued to argue with me on the phone but ultimately gave in and said he would cover the lug nuts. I showed up today for payment and the owner wasn't there and apparently they can't give a refund unless he is there? The manager told me I would have to come back. They were fully aware I was going to come for a refund today and agreed to refund me so I did not show up unannounced. I originally said I wouldn't leave a bad review as long as I was refunded for the damage but I'm not going to chase down this owner for my money. I understand mistakes happen but I would have appreciated Tuffy owning up to their mistake and covering the replacement of my lug nuts and the damage to my rim. I will certainly never be back and would not recommend this shop to anyone.
Joel and his team are great, honest and fair. I had another auto repair shop say I needed new brakes and I took it to Tuffy at my next oil change for another opinion. Joel told me that I still had 80% left on my brakes and they did not need replaced. I have always had great service at a fair price.
Say what you want about the prices, but the work they do is so worth it. Every single guy that works there is very kind and understanding. They make you feel at home and are very easy to talk to. They work with you if you are a loyal customer, along with helping you understand what is wrong with your car. They are the only mechanics that I’ve been to who personally walks me out to my car and show me what is wrong and why it’s wrong. Some may say they are to expensive, but do you realize that in the end you pay for what you get? High price= high quality work. Shout out to the real MVPs here.
